Sand Cherry is a deciduous shrub that belongs to the rose family (Rosaceae) and is native to North America. It typically grows 3-6 feet (1-2 meters) tall and wide, with a spreading, rounded shape. The branches are covered in reddish-brown bark and are covered in glossy, dark green leaves that are elliptical in shape and have serrated edges.

In the spring, Sand Cherry produces fragrant white or pinkish flowers that are about 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide, which bloom in clusters of 2-5. These flowers are followed by small, edible fruit that are about 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) in diameter and are reddish-purple to almost black in color. These fruits are popular with birds and can also be used to make jams and jellies.

Sand Cherry prefers full sun to partial shade and well-drained, sandy soil. It is drought tolerant and can be used as a low-maintenance ornamental shrub or as a hedge. Sand Cherry is also a popular plant for erosion control and for use in xeriscaping, which is the practice of landscaping with drought-tolerant plants.
